Let's just pay homage to Will It Blend?
There was a time before the iPhone. When it came out in summer 2007, it revolutionised mobile phones and EVERYONE wanted one really badly .. including me, and I'm a Linux user (pretty much the opposite of an Apple Fanboy).
Blendtec had a super-robust blender.
Their fans asked them to blend an iPhone. So there's perfection number one: the idea came from their fanbase.
YouTube was only two years old, but was already consuming half of Internet traffic.
Blendtec approached the task with a tightly scripted, eighties-style (I'm guessing) tongue-in-cheek format that's really stood the test of time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_It_Blend%3F . Remember the ads where the business owner would lamely encourage you to visit his carpet shop or whatever? This is a business owner video, done right.
This video, of course, went viral. They did something outrageous to something that was white-hot in the media using a fast-growing medium. "Revenues rose 500%" says Buzz Marketing http://amzn.to/2sAMyF3
A lot went in to making this perhaps the most viral video of all time (nearly 13m views https://youtu.be/qg1ckCkm8YI 902,000 subscribers, nearly 7,000 comments).
But one place to look for ideas is what's popular & trending right now: https://trends.google.co.uk/trends/
The other side of this is to catch a media trend and really showcase the format. YouTube was hungry for content back then. Now, Instagram? WhatsApp?
